Main Festival

Year after year the Salvadoran people celebrate this great Solemnity of the Transfiguration of the Lord (Mt. 17, 1-9; Mc. 9, 1-13; Lc 9, 28-36). It is a long-awaited celebration and, above all, well prepared.
August 5th
On the 5th, resuming an ancient tradition, the image of the Divine Savior is carried in a procession that begins at 8:00 a.m. from the Cathedral to the Church of El Calvario. At 11:00 a.m., it departs from the latter parish to the Basilica of the Sacred Heart.
At 3:30 pm, the Vespers Celebration begins.
The Metropolitan Archbishop of San Salvador and his Auxiliary Bishop accompany this activity.
During the tour, appropriate mobile sound systems are provided to assist the people's devotion and thus accompany the procession with commentary, prayers, and songs.

Following the Celebration of Vespers, the long-awaited procession of the Savior of the World begins through the streets of downtown, ending in front of the Metropolitan Cathedral.
The route is as follows: upon leaving the Basilica, the procession takes 13th Avenue North to join 2nd Street West (better known as "Rubén Darío" Street) until it reaches Plaza Barrios. The pilgrimage will pass in front of the National Palace and circle around the plaza until it reaches the front of the Metropolitan Cathedral. The traditional "Descent" will take place in front of the parish church where the Divine Savior originates.

ARRIVAL AT THE CIVIC SQUARE
Between 5:45 and 6:00 p.m., the Divine Savior is expected to arrive at the Civic Plaza with the procession of images. The following activities will take place there:
National Anthem of El Salvador.
Message to the Nation from the Archbishop of San Salvador.
Descent with fireworks.
Hymn of the Savior of the World.
Entrance to the Cathedral to venerate the sacred images.
